WordPress versions between 2.8.0 and 2.8.3 have a major security issue which allows anyone (not just hackers, but literally anyone) to change the admin password on your blog in a matter of minutes. Full info can be found here.

Version 2.8.4 was created to remedy that and I hope most of you already upgraded.

Many people will not click the upgrade link right away and even more will not bother to read the explanation on the development blog about the latest patch.

My feeling is that in a situation like this where security is severely compromised (and it can not get much worse than this) I feel WordPress should have another mechanism of displaying big red warning advising the user to upgrade immediately or even performing the upgrade by itself.

While I am glad this big country has started to master the art of search engine optimization and offering it for outsourcing, the conversation usually goes in the same way every time.

So if you are an SEO company from India here are few tips before you approach me next time.

At least have a website. Many of the very confident SEO companies I talked to did not even have a website as they were ‘too busy serving their clients’.

I will ask you to show me a competitive keyword you ranked your own site for. In many cases this is where the big silence occurs. Then some of the more agile will want ‘just a minute’ and start browsing through their keyword rankings. If you want to take care of my site I expect you to have taken good care of yours first. And you should not need to go through keyword reports to know what keywords you optimized your site for

If you want to ask for $1000/month for SEO work, you need to have a money back guarantee policy

Show flexibility in your skills, as I want to hire a company not software

So far I have tried around a dozen of companies which passed this simple test. I kept working with only one which on the top of the list has good manners and customer relations.

So does outsourcing SEO to India work?

I think India has one of the strongest IT sectors on the planet and a huge potential for outsourcing SEO work. However the companies in India still lack basic business skills in communicating with the clients in the West.

It is getting better but still be prepared to get burnt in more cases than not. At least in many cases you were not going to lose a lot of money (but this is changing too).

It#8217;s built into Apache servers natively, though not enabled by default. /p
pIt#8217;s capable of functions beyond simple rewrites, though, some of which are included below./p
pspan id=”more-20451″/span/p
hr/
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/modrewrite-image1.jpg” width=”500″ height=”325″ alt=”Mod_Rewrite Rules You Should Know”//p
h3 class=”title”Turn Mod_Rewrite On/h3
pMod_rewrite is used through your .htaccess file. Place the following code at the beginning of your .htaccess file to turn mod_rewrite on:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteEngine on
/pre
p(Don#8217;t forget that .htaccess commands are case-sensitive.) This code needs to be entered at the beginning of any .htaccess file using mod_rewrite./p
h3 class=”title”The Basic Mod_Rewrite Layout/h3
pThe basic format for a mod_rewrite command is:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteRule Pattern Substitution [Flag(s)]
/pre
h3 class=”title”URLs are Always Relative/h3
pThe URL you redirect to is always relative to the directory in which your .htaccess file is placed. So if it#8217;s in the root directory, URLs are all in relation to the root directory; if it#8217;s in a sudirectory, URLs are in relation to that particular subdirectory./p
h3 class=”title”A Basic Redirect/h3
pIf you just want to create a simple 301 redirect from one URL to another, then use the following code:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteRule ^fileone.html$ filetwo.html
/pre
pThis is a very basic rule that means any requests for fileone.html will be sent to filetwo.html./p
h3 class=”title”Require no #8220;www#8221;/h3
pThis bit of code will make it so visitors to your site don#8217;t need to type in the #8220;www#8221; bit of your website address./p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} !^domain\.com$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain.com/$1 [R=301,L]
/pre
h3 class=”title”Block a Specific IP Address/h3
pIf you want to block someone coming from a specific IP address from accessing your website, you can use the following code:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteCond %{REMOTE_ADDR} ^(A\.B\.C\.D)$
RewriteRule ^/* http://www.domain.com/sorry.html [L]
/pre
pReplace the A\.B\.C\.D with the IP address you want to block (don#8217;t forget to leave the #8220;\#8221; before each dot, which escapes the character). /p
h3 class=”title”Block Specific User Agents/h3
pIf you want to block a group of IP addresses using the same User Agent (bot), the following code with do it:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} UserAgent
RewriteRule .* – [F,L]
/pre
pJust replace the #8220;UserAgent#8221; bit with whatever user agent you want to block. You can also block more than one at a time by replacing the top line in that code with something like this:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} UserAgentA [OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_USER_AGENT} UserAgentB
/pre
pYou can put as many user agents in as you want, just make sure you end each line with [OR] (with the exception of the last line, of course)./p
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/modrewrite-image2.jpg” width=”500″ height=”375″ //p
h3 class=”title”Strip Query Strings/h3
pLet#8217;s say all the pages on your site other than your home page are formatted as follows, with query strings instead of page names:/p
phttp://www.domain.com/home.html?example=12345abcd/p
pThose aren#8217;t very pretty, and on top of that, search engines will show a bunch of duplicated #8220;home#8221; pages. If you want to get rid of the query string in your page URLs, use the following code:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteCond %{QUERY_STRING} example=
RewriteRule (.*) http://www.domain.com/$1? [R=301]
/pre
pThis not only gets rid of the query string, but also the preceding question mark./p
h3 class=”title”Set up a Default Image/h3
pUsing a default, backup image in case of broken images can make your site look more professional. Use the following code to redirect to a default image for any image whose file cannot be found./p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteCond %{REQUEST_FILENAME} !-f
RewriteRule ^images/.*\.jpg$ /images/default.jpg [L]
/pre
pOf course, you can change the #8220;.jpg#8221; bit to whatever file type you#8217;re using. Make sure you have an image called #8220;default.jpg#8221; or change that to whatever your default image filename is./p
h3 class=”title”Prevent Hotlinking/h3
pThe last thing most website owners want is other sites stealing their content or worse—hotlinking to their images and stealing their bandwidth. Here#8217;s a simple bit of code that prevents it:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://(www\.)?domain.com/ .*$ [NC]
RewriteRule \.(gif|jpg|swf|flv|png)$ /feed/ [R=302,L]
/pre
pMake sure you change the #8220;domain.com#8221; bit to your own domain name./p
h3 class=”title”Redirect to a Maintenance Page/h3
pIf you need to take your entire site offline for a bit and redirect to a maintenance page (or some other page), use the following code:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RedirectMatch 302 ^/ /maintenancepage.html
/pre
pChange the #8220;maintenancepage.html#8221; bit to wherever your maintenance page file is located./p
h3 class=”title”Redirect Multiple Domains to a Single Domain/h3
pIf you have multiple domains pointing to your site, it#8217;s possible you could take a hit in the search engines for having duplicate content. Use the following code to redirect visitors from two domains to just one:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.net$ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^domain.net$ [NC,OR]
RewriteCond %{HTTP_HOST} ^www.domain.net$ [NC]
RewriteRule ^(.*)$ http://domain.net/$1 [R=301,L]
/pre
h3 class=”title”Remember the Filesystem Always Takes Precedence/h3
pThe filesystem on your server will always take precedence over the rewritten URL. For example, if you have a directory named #8220;services#8221; and within that directory is a file called #8220;design.html#8221;, you can#8217;t have the URL redirect to #8220;http://domain.com/services#8221;. What happens is that Apache goes into the #8220;services#8221; directory and doesn#8217;t see the rewrite instructions. /p
pTo fix this, simply rename your directory (adding an underscore to the beginning or end is a simple way to do that)./p
h3 class=”title”Remember:/h3
ul
liBecause mod_rewrite works within the .htaccess file, commands are case sensitive./li
liAlways back up your .htaccess file before making any changes to it. This way, if there#8217;s a problem, you can easily restore your site./li
pFinding the right theme can be a long and arduous process – a process that becomes more important when we’re talking about Shopping Cart or eCommerce themes. There are two big differences between picking a theme for your Dallas-Cowboys-bashing blog and the theme for your custom furniture shop./p
ul class=”post”
listrongCredibility:/strong Your blog has the luxury of being superficial – looking good is important to attract readers. When it’s your storefront, looks sometimes have to be sacrificed for personality. Shoppers not only want to be aesthetically pleased, they want to believe you will hold up your end of the bargain./li
listrongCost:/strong With great credibility comes great responsibility… wait, that’s not how it goes. Anyway, when it comes to shopping cart themes, you will see less for ‘free’. This is because it is a more difficult task to construct a decent theme for a shopping cart – there is far more involved. Don’t think of the price as an inhibitor – if your store sells, you’ll easily recoup the costs and you’ll feel better about a higher quality template. We’ve tried to include some of both (free and premium) samples here./li
/ul
pspan id=”more-20330″/span/p
pIn this article, our goal is to show you some of the better themes for your shopping cart – we’ve got themes here forem WordPress, osCommerce, Magento, Zen Cart, and CRE Loaded/em. In case you haven’t decided on a platform yet, we’ll take a moment to look at the advantage of each, and then dive into the templates. Things we kept in mind when making our selections:/p
ul class=”post”
liemstrongCredibility: /strong/emIs this a store that I would buy from? Many themes are built around a generic store type (Has anyone else realized how many ‘Lingerie Shop’ templates are out there?) so we only choose themes where we could imagine them selling products other than what was shown./li
listrongemAesthetics:/em/strong Yup, at the end of the day, although it may not factor into your ability to sell (depending on your target audience) we just want things to look impressive. We used ‘looks’ as a tiebreaker after personality (just like the real world)./li
listrongemPrice:/em/strong Finding free themes is tough – finding free themes you trust enough to download can be even tougher. Some artists have been kind enough to offer their talents for free, but we have also included a good deal of paid Premium templates. We looked for those ‘reasonably’ priced themes though, and kept out ones where we thought the price was not proportionate to the quality./li
/ul
h3 class=”title”Wordpress/h3
pWe all probably know WP as a blogging platform, but extensibility is a powerful thing. Although there are a few eCommerce plug-ins for WordPress, the most notable is the wp e-commerce by a group called Instinct. They’ve also added a ‘Gold Cart’ upgrade for those of you who find success and need to step it up again./p
h4 class=”title”Vanilla Cart/h4
pA Free WordPress offering #8211; to be used with the aforementioned wp e-commerce plug-in. Clean and complete template./p
p class=”img”a href=”http://shoppingthemes.com/vanillacart/”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/shop-1.png” alt=”"//a/p
h4 class=”title”Crafty Cart/h4
pOne of the best #8211; hands down. Looks great, good credibility, and free./p
p class=”img”a href=”http://www.thekingcart.com/2008/10/02/crafty-cart-free-wordpress-ecommerce-plugin-theme/”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/shop-2.png” alt=”"//a/p
h4 class=”title”ShopperPress/h4
pA theme with its own set of themes#8230; probably one of the prettiest I found (for free, too!) but didn#39;t sacrifice personality./p
p class=”img”a href=”http://shopperpress.com/”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/shop-3.png” alt=”shopperpress” alt=”"//a/p
h4 class=”title”eGoods/h4
pNot as pretty, but this template had the most potential #8211; it has more features and functions to help take you to the next level./p
p class=”img”a href=”http://www.sarah-neuber.de/shop/wordpress-themes/egoods”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/shop-4.png” alt=”"//a/p
h3 class=”title”osCommerce/h3
posCommerce, the ‘os’ an acronym for ‘open source’, is a free php-based ecommerce platform. With automatic web-browser based installation, osCommerce is easy to set up and to work with. The product catalog never seems to get to big or the hierarchy too complicated for osCommerce and they support all of the major payment portals you would want to be supported./p
h4 class=”title”Clothes Store/h4
pGood design and style, strong credibility. Sets the bar high for other osCommerce templates./p
p class=”img”a href=”http://www.templatemonster.com/oscommerce-templates/23890.html”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/shop-5.png” alt=”"//a/p
h4 class=”title”Print Store/h4
pSomething different. Lacks some credibility, but it gets you thinking about ways to leverage design to create an interesting storefront./p
p class=”img”a href=”http://www.templatemonster.com/oscommerce-templates/21312.html”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/shop-6.png” alt=”"//a/p
p class=”img”a href=”http://www.freetemplatesite.com/”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/shop-7.png” alt=”"//a/p
h3 class=”title”Magento/h3
pMagento is a strong offering in the shop-cart world with a ‘Magento Community’ edition, which is offered at no cost and is open source. Magento full features list(link) is impressive, but its clear they are now focusing more on their ‘Enterprise’ level solution. Their ‘Community Edition’ product page includes a small blurb which spends half its time telling you the product is provided ‘as-is’ without support, and also includes a link to their Enterprise page./p
pThat said, Magento is still a strong offering and offers a range of features and usability not easily rivaled. Just keep in mind you will have to offer yourself support, which is something that some small businesses can’t afford to do./p
h4 class=”title”JM Lead/h4
pA Magento theme from JoomlArt#8230; very strong offering includes a product slider on the homepage./p
pThis is a good example of something a little #39;outside-the-box#39; #8211; Men, Women, and Kids could be turned into your top three categories. Minimalist design./p
h3 class=”title”Zen Cart/h3
pZen Cart might have been this developing industry’s leader at one point in time, but it doesn’t appear to compete as well against some of the other offerings today. As other offerings move to enterprise level solutions, Zen Cart will continue to have a strong offering for its particular user base. It does offer a lot of the same features as some of the other players, and also offers a newsletter manager, coupons and certificates, and bulk pricing – all interesting features./p
h4 class=”title”Interior Design/h4
pLove the featured area here #8211; the large image, flanked by the three selling areas could highlight categories of your store, or individual products./p
h3 class=”title”CRE Loaded/h3
pBefore writing this article, I had honestly not heard of this company. It didn’t take me very long at all to understand that their major selling point was PCI compliance. I’ve had enough technical conversations with those who work finance in web companies, and, while they have no idea what PHP, ASP, or CSS is, their eyes light up when you say PCI. It’s often a dealbreaker. Don’t know what PCI Compliance is?/p
h4 class=”title”Shoes Store/h4
pAn interesting use of space at the top of the template. High contrast on the nav bar above helps a user with crucial links (i.e. cart)/p
h4 class=”title”Drug Store/h4
He’s enjoying the wind and the fresh air – until he notices the other waves in front of him, crashing against the shore. “My God, this terrible”,the wave says. “Look what’s going to happen to me!”

Then along comes another wave. It sees the first wave, looking grim, and it says to him: “Why do you look so sad?” The first wave says: “You don’t understand! We’re all going to crash against the rocks! All of us waves are going to be nothing! Isn’t it terrible?”

The second wave says: “No, you don’t understand. You’re not a wave, you’re part of the ocean.”

The Mexican fisherman

An American investment banker was at the pier of a small coastal Mexican village when a small boat with just one fisherman docked. Inside the small boat were several large yellow fin tuna. The American complimented the Mexican on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took to catch them.

The Mexican replied, “only a little while.”

The American then asked why didn’t he stay out longer and catch more fish?

The Mexican said he had enough to support his family’s immediate needs.

The American then asked, “but what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The Mexican fisherman said, “I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take siesta with my wife, Maria, stroll into the village each evening where I sip wine and play guitar with my amigos, I have a full and busy life.”

The American scoffed, “I am a Harvard MBA and could help you. You should spend more time fishing and with the proceeds, buy a bigger boat with the proceeds from the bigger boat you could buy several boats, eventually you would have a fleet of fishing boats. Instead of selling your catch to a middleman you would sell directly to the processor, eventually opening your own cannery. You would control the product, processing and distribution. You would need to leave this small coastal fishing village and move to Mexico City, then LA and eventually NYC where you will run your expanding enterprise.”

The Mexican fisherman asked, “But, how long will this all take?”

To which the American replied, “15-20 years.”

“But what then?”

The American laughed and said that’s the best part. “When the time is right you would announce an IPO and sell your company stock to the public and become very rich, you would make millions.”

“Millions.. Then what?”

The American said, “Then you would retire. Move to a small coastal fishing village where you would sleep late, fish a little, play with your kids, take siesta with your wife, stroll to the village in the evenings where you could sip wine and play your guitar with your amigos.”

I am now sitting on the terrace of my island house in the Adriatic sea and have the most wonderful view that I’d like to take a photo of and publish here, to share and freeze the moment in time.

But the whole idea of having to take a picture either by camera or phone, then upload it to the laptop either with cable or bluetooth, resize it, and finally upload it to this blog post makes it enough for me to give up it (you can call me lazy freely).

Can the mighty iphone or anything else out there in the world do this in 20 seconds? I am a buyer.

/ul
pspan id=”more-19960″/span/p
h3 class=”title”Self-Referential Relationship/h3
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/ror3/friends.jpg” alt=”Friends”//p
pTo create friendships between users we have to deal with a special type of association, which is called a self referential relationship. It is called this because the model (in this case, User) references itself. Why? Well if a given #8220;user#8221; has many #8220;friends#8221;, those #8220;friends#8221; are also #8220;users#8221;. Furthermore, each of those friends can also have friends, so we are dealing with a many to many relationship./p
pThe relationship can affectively be called a #8220;friendship#8221; because friendships can be gained and lost (as in real life). So, let#8217;s create the friendship model with two foreign keys./p
pre name=”code” class=”php”

 ruby script/generate model friendship user_id:integer friend_id:integer
/pre
pNow, migrate the database:-/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
rake db:migrate
/pre
h3 class=”title”Making and Losing Friends/h3
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/ror3/relationship.jpg” alt=”Making Friends”//p
pWe will need to create and destroy friendships and for this we will need a controller for friendships:-/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
ruby script/generate controller friendships
/pre
pNow add the create and destroy methods as shown below:-/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
class FriendshipsController ApplicationController
def create
@friendship = current_user.friendships.build(:friend_id = params[:friend_id])
if @friendship.save
flash[:notice] = “Added friend.”
redirect_to root_url
else
flash[:error] = “Error occurred when adding friend.”
redirect_to root_url
end
end

 def destroy
@friendship = current_user.friendships.find(params[:id])
@friendship.destroy
flash[:notice] = “Successfully destroyed friendship.”
redirect_to root_url
end
end
/pre
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/ror3/makefriends.png” alt=”Making Friends Page”//p
pSo, what exactly do we relate the user model to?? Well, first we need to specify that the friendship model belongs to a friend (which is actually a user!). You can do this by adding some more lines to the user model:-/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
class Friendship ActiveRecord::Base
…
belongs_to :friend, :class_name = “User”
end
/pre
pWe need to add two lines to the User model. A User has many friendships and has many friends through friendships. This reads almost exactly as it is coded, which is a testament to Ruby on Rails./p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
class User ActiveRecord::Base
has_many :friendships
has_many :friends, :through = :friendships
…
end
/pre
h3 class=”title”Listing your Friends/h3
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/ror3/crowd.jpg” alt=”List Friends”//p
pIf we want to list all the registered users and allow the current user to befriend other users, then we will need to create a new view in the users folder called index.html.erb:-/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
div id=”users”
% @users.each do |user| %
div id=”user”
% if user.username != current_user.username %
%=h user.username %
%= link_to “Add Friend”, friendships_path(:friend_id = user), :method = :post %
% end %
/div

 % end %
/div
/pre
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/ror3/listfriends.png” alt=”Listing Friends Page”//p
pNow, let#8217;s put the controller actions in place. Open the users_controller file and add the index and show methods./p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
class UsersController ApplicationController
def index
@users = User.all
end

 def show
@user = current_user
end
…
end
/pre
pWe need to do two more things before we can give this a whirl. First add the friendships resource to the routes file:-/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
map.resources :friendships
/pre
p…and finally, we can add some links on the posts/index.html.erb file:-/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
…

%= link_to “Make Friends”, users_path %

%= link_to “My Friends”, { :controller = “users”, :action = “show”, :id = current_user } %
/pre
pOk, we can now start up the server and browse to http://localhost:3000 to have a look./p
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/ror3/home.png” alt=”Home Page”//p
h3 class=”title”Summary/h3
pObviously there are several directions you could take this application. A lot of features could be added and it could be spruced up, somewhat. I hope these tutorials have helped you in some way and again, I would highly recommend that you try Ruby on Rails, if you haven’t already./p
After all, it#8217;s an incredibly powerful tool and one that has the potential to completely break your site if you#8217;re not careful./p
pBelow are a dozen basic htaccess techniques and tips to get you started. They#8217;re not nearly as intimidating as many people expect, and if you study the code for a few minutes, I#8217;m sure you#8217;ll quickly grasp exactly how they work and why./p
pAfter that are a few bewares and don#8217;ts for working with htaccess to help keep you out of trouble, and some more resources for further working with htaccess./p
pspan id=”more-19525″/span/p
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/1092550_15746034.jpg” alt=”htaccess Techniques”//p
h3 class=”title”12 Basic htaccess Tips:/h3
h4 class=”title”1. Create a custom error page./h4
p.htaccess on a Linux Apache server makes it easy to create your own custom error pages. Just create your custom error page files and then add this code to your .htaccess file:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”ErrorDocument 401 /401.php
ErrorDocument 403 /403.php
ErrorDocument 404 /404.php
ErrorDocument 500 /500.php
/pre
p(Obviously you should replace the #8220;/500.php#8221; or whatever with your own file path and name.)/p
h4 class=”title”2. Prevent directory browsing./h4
pIf you don#8217;t include an index file in a directory, visitors can browse the directory itself. But preventing that is as easy as adding a single line to your .htaccess file:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
Options All -Indexes
/pre
h4 class=”title”3. Set the default page of each directory./h4
pIf you don#8217;t want to use an index page in each directory, you can set the default page visited when someone reaches (like an about page or a page offering the newest content) that directory by adding this:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
DirectoryIndex news.html
/pre
p(And of course you#8217;d replace the #8220;news.html#8221; bit with whatever you want to use as the default.)/p
h4 class=”title”4. Set up a 301 redirect./h4
pIf you move around the structure of your site and need to redirect some old URLs to their new locations, the following bit of code will do so for you:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
h4 class=”title”5. Compress file output with GZIP./h4
pYou can add the following code to your htaccess file to compress all of your JavaScript, CSS and HTML files using GZIP./p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
lt;IfModule mod_gzip.cgt;
mod_gzip_on Yes
mod_gzip_dechunk	Yes
mod_gzip_item_include file \.(html?|txt|css|js|php|pl)$
mod_gzip_item_include handler ^cgi-script$
mod_gzip_item_include mime ^text\.*
mod_gzip_item_include mime ^application/x-javascript.*
mod_gzip_item_exclude mime ^image\.*
mod_gzip_item_exclude rspheader	^Content-Encoding:.*gzip.*
lt;/IfModulegt;
/pre
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/1160560_58688732.jpg” alt=”secure https connection”//p
h4 class=”title”6. Redirect to a secure https connection/h4
pIf you want to redirect your entire site to a secure https connection, use the following:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTPS} !on
RewriteRule (.*) https://%{HTTP_HOST}%{REQUEST_URI}
/pre
h4 class=”title”7. Block script execution./h4
pYou can stop scripts in certain languages from running with this:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
Options -ExecCGI
AddHandler cgi-script .pl .py .php .jsp. htm .shtml .sh .asp .cgi
/pre
pJust replace the types of scripts you want to block./p
h4 class=”title”8. Force a file to download with a #8220;Save As#8221; prompt./h4
pIf you want to force someone to download a file instead of opening it in their browser, use this code:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
AddType application/octet-stream .doc .mov .avi .pdf .xls .mp4
/pre
h4 class=”title”9. Restrict file upload limits for PHP./h4
pYou can restrict the maximum file size for uploading in PHP, as well as the maximum execution time. Just add this:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
php_value upload_max_filesize 10M
php_value post_max_size 10M
php_value max_execution_time 200
php_value max_input_time 200
/pre
pLine one specifies the maximum file size for uploading; line two is the maximum size for post data; line three is the maximum time in seconds a script can run before it#8217;s terminated; and line four is the maximum amount of time in seconds a script is allowed to parse input data./p
h4 class=”title”10. Enable File Caching./h4
pEnabling file caching can greatly improve your site#8217;s performance and speed. Use the following code to set up caching (changing the file types and time values to suit your site#8217;s needs):/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
#cache html and htm files for one day
lt;FilesMatch quot;.(html|htm)$quot;gt;
Header set Cache-Control quot;max-age=43200quot;
lt;/FilesMatchgt;

#cache css, javascript and text files for one week
lt;FilesMatch quot;.(js|css|txt)$quot;gt;
Header set Cache-Control quot;max-age=604800quot;
lt;/FilesMatchgt;

#cache flash and images for one month
lt;FilesMatch quot;.(flv|swf|ico|gif|jpg|jpeg|png)$quot;gt;
Header set Cache-Control quot;max-age=2592000quot;
lt;/FilesMatchgt;

#disable cache for script files
lt;FilesMatch quot;\.(pl|php|cgi|spl|scgi|fcgi)$quot;gt;
Header unset Cache-Control
lt;/FilesMatchgt;
/pre
p(Time shown for max-age is in seconds.)/p
h4 class=”title”11. Protect your site from hotlinking./h4
pThe last thing you want is for those stealing your content to also be able to embed the images hosted on your server in their posts. It takes up your bandwidth and can quickly get expensive. Here#8217;s a way to block hotlinking within htaccess:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
RewriteEngine On
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^$
RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} !^http://([ -a-z0-9] \.)?domain\.com [NC]
RewriteRule \.(gif|jpe?g|png)$ – [F,NC,L]
/pre
p(Of course you#8217;ll want to replace the domain\.com with your own domain name.)/p
h4 class=”title”12. Disguise your file types./h4
pYou can disguise all of your file types by making them appear as PHP files. Just insert this snippet in:/p
pre name=”code” class=”php”
ForceType application/x-httpd-php
/pre
p class=”img”img src=”http://noupe.com/img/1096880_63786041.jpg” alt=”htaccess Techniques”//p
h3 class=”title”8 Common htaccess Mistakes and Don#8217;ts:/h3
ul class=”post”
listrongBe careful of spelling/strong- .htaccess is not forgiving of spelling errors./li
listronghtaccess is case sensitive/strong. If something is shown in the examples with a capital letter, make sure it#8217;s capitalized in your htaccess file./li
listrongConsider your caching/strong needs carefully before setting it up. If your site is almost entirely static, you can set longer cache times. If your site changes daily, make sure you adapt which files will cache for how long. There#8217;s nothing worse as a visitor than coming back to a site thinking there#8217;s been an update and not seeing it./li
liDon#8217;t forget tostrong comment out your notes/strong within the file. This is done by adding a # before the comment line./li
listrongAlways test your site/strong immediately after making any changes to your htaccess file. One mistyped character could make the difference between your site working and being down for hours before you realize what#8217;s happened./li
liOn that note, always make sure youstrong backup your htaccess/strong file before making any changes. That way, if there is a problem, you can easily swap back in the old file./li
liMake sure any essential htaccess functions you#8217;ve included are strongcross-browser compatible/strong. There are certain things some browsers just won#8217;t support (one example is with certain methods for forcing file downloads)./li
liRemember when protecting a web directory with htaccess, that unless it#8217;s restricted to https access, the password could be sniffed (as your authentication will be done over an un-secure connection)./li
